A five-year-old girl was kidnapped this morning, apparently accidentally, during a car theft. A man parked his Cadillac at a gas station, with his daughter in the back seat. When he went inside to pay for the gas, a white van pulled up beside the car and a person jumped into the Cadillac and took off. The girl was found a couple of blocks away unharmed; the Cadillac turned up abandoned later…

Oakland hit its 48th homicide of the year early this morning as a man was shot in West Oakland on his way home from work around 1:50 a.m. The victim was a 53-year-old man who apparently lived by himself. No motive, no suspects have been identified. . .
A man has been arrested in the mauling death of a two-year-old Concord boy yesterday. The boy was killed by three of his family’s five pit bull terriers when he stepped into the garage where the dogs were kept. The boy’s step-grandfather was arrested yesterday on suspicion of child endangerment and owning a dangerous animal. It’s apparently illegal to have more than three dogs in any one house in the city. KTVU has a jailhouse interview with the step-grandfather. . .
