SF Marijuana busts mostly in the Sunset, Ingleside and Bayview-Hunter’s Point

Timothy Smith

Last month, we brought you partial statistics for marijuana grow busts by the San Francisco Police Department: roughly 13,500 plants worth an estimated $11.5 million were seized from 59 indoor grows from January through September of 2010.

SFPD Sgt. Mike Andraychak got back to us yesterday with the year-end tally from the Narcotics Division. And those last few months were fruitful. Approximately 19,000 plants were seized from 87 locations in total. The plants are work up to $15.7 million, although street prices for marijuana have since declined since SFPD provided us with their original figures (kudos to SF Weekly).
68 people were arrested in the raids, and 20 guns were seized. Thirty-two percent of the locations, or 27 sites, were electrical by-passes.

Some incidents of note in the city yesterday, from the San Francisco Police Department’s bulletin:

  • Two 19-year-old men were injured in an early morning melee in the Inner Sunset this morning that involved fourteen people. The two victims and a pair of friends, all white malesĀ  were walking on 21st Avenue and Irving Street around 1 AM this morning when they were approached by two Asian men in their late teens or early twenties. An argument ensued between the two groups. After one of the Asian men made a call on his cellphone, four of their friends showed up and a brawl ensued.During the mayhem, the 19-year-olds were struck on the head with a tire iron and a knife. The six suspects fled in two cars, described as a Green Ford Windstar van and a black two-door Honda. Police stopped the Windstar and briefly detained two men, but released them because their involvement in the incident was unclear. One of the two victims was treated at San Francisco General Hospital for cuts to his head.

Another calm SF weekend: AM senior shooting, brass knuckle robbery, Monster Park stabbing

lawreports.co.uk

It’s the middle of October, the air is turning brisk and Halloween is around the corner. The falling temperature doesn’t have much of a calming affect on San Franciscans, making hard work for city police officers. Fifteen robberies took place from Friday through Sunday, as well as four stabbings and three shootings. Here’s a selection of some of the incidents from this weekend’s blotter.

  • A Saturday morning dispute between a pair of AARP-eligible Asians was ended abruptly by gunfire, with an 80-year-old man narrowly dodging a bullet. The 80-year-old and his former neighbor, 67-year-old man Shun Fat Cheung, got into an argument around 8:16 AM on the 1300 block of Stockton Street. At some point, Cheung pulled a handgun and fired a shot. The round missed the 80-year-old but sent him sprawling, cutting the back of his head. SFPD officers later arrested Cheung, who has been charged with attempted murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, possessing a prohibited firearm and…elder abuse. A revolver was recovered at the scene and booked into evidence. Continue reading
