Just to throw out an understatement, the next head of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation will be taking on a lot. That individual will be taking the helm of one of the biggest prison systems in the world, in the midst of an overcrowding crisis, in a state that’s in an economic pit. Current Secretary Matt Cate has been in the role for about two-and-a-half years, which is longer than most recent secretaries have served. Some reports indicate Brown plans on keeping Cate around. (Brown’s transition team spokespeople will not confirm or deny.) Naturally, there are many names other still in the rumor mill, including everyone from former Secretary (and onetime San Quentin Warden) Jeanne Woodford, to SF Probation Chief Wendy Still, to retired State Senator Robert Presley.
