Three ways to look at the FBI crime stats

Federal Bureau of Investigation

Crime in the U.S. has been steadily dropping for three years.

  • By race. Out of 13,687,241 arrests last year: 69.1 percent arrested were white, 28.3 percent were black, and the remaining 2.6 percent were of other races. (NOTE: The FBI does not consider “Latino” a race, so people of Hispanic origin are folded into any of these three categories.)
  • By gender. Almost 75 percent of arrests were males. For violent crimes, that number goes up to 81.2 percent; for property crimes, 62.6 percent of persons arrested were men.
  • By crime. The highest arrest counts for more serious (known as part I and II) crimes are for drugs (1,663,582), driving under the influence (1,440,409), and theft (1,224,933).
